Malnourished Minors Collapse During Court Arraignment Over Protests

Malnourished Minors Collapse During Court Arraignment Over Protests

In a distressing turn of events, minors who protested against poor governance in August were arraigned in an Abuja court, appearing visibly malnourished. Several of these young protesters collapsed from severe hunger after enduring prolonged detention by the government.

The incident, which has sparked outrage, highlights the plight of these minors who have been held since August on accusations of attempting to destabilize the government. These allegations have been widely criticized as baseless, revealing a disturbing disregard for the rights and welfare of these young citizens.

The sight of these starving youths, detained simply for speaking out, is an affront to justice and humanity. Detaining minors for months without proper care is a violation of human rights and a testament to a regime more focused on silencing voices than addressing the genuine struggles of its people.

The Nigerian Judiciary, Executive, and Legislative branches have come under fire for their handling of the situation. Critics argue that the state of the nation under Tinubu’s leadership speaks volumes, with Nigerians suffering from unprecedented levels of hardship, including surging hunger, widespread poverty, record-high inflation, rampant unemployment, escalating insecurity, and a surge in kidnappings and killings.

Rather than addressing these pressing crises, the government has chosen to target, brutalize, and silence those who demand accountability. Nigerians are being deprived of their democratic right to question leadership and demand better governance.

Despite the suppression, activists vow to continue their fight for justice. Plans are underway for a return to the streets in November, standing firm on the fundamental human right of every Nigerian to protest and demand change.

EFCC ARRESTS FORMER TARABA GOVERNOR

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and detained former Taraba State Governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, over allegations of a ₦27 billion fraud. Ishaku is facing 15 charges, including criminal breach of trust, misappropriation, and diversion of public funds. The EFCC apprehended him at his Abuja residence in the early hours of Friday.

The case involves accusations of significant financial misconduct during his tenure as governor. Ishaku is expected to be arraigned in court soon, where he will face these charges formally.

The alleged misappropriation of ₦27 billion during former Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku's tenure reportedly affected several key projects in Taraba State. These include:

Infrastructure Development: Funds meant for road construction and maintenance were allegedly diverted, leading to incomplete or poorly executed projects.

Healthcare Initiatives: Budget allocations for upgrading hospitals and healthcare facilities were misappropriated, impacting the quality of healthcare services.

Educational Program: Investments intended for improving educational infrastructure and resources in schools were not fully utilized, affecting the state's educational development.

Agricultural Projects: Funds earmarked for boosting agricultural productivity and supporting local farmers were allegedly siphoned off, hindering agricultural growth.

These allegations suggest a significant impact on the state's development across multiple sectors. The EFCC's investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the misappropriation and hold those responsible accountable.

Former Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku's arrest by the EFCC was based on substantial evidence gathered during a covert investigation that began after he left office.

Key pieces of evidence include:

Financial Records: Detailed financial records showing discrepancies and unauthorized transactions during his tenure.

Witness Testimonies: Statements from multiple witnesses, including government officials and contractors, who provided information on the alleged misappropriation of funds.

Audit Reports: Independent audit reports highlighting significant financial irregularities and mismanagement of public funds.

Bank Statements: Bank statements revealing suspicious transfers and withdrawals linked to Ishaku and his associates.

These pieces of evidence have been compiled into at least 15 charges against Ishaku, which he will face in court soon⁵⁶.

If former Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku is found guilty of the charges against him, he could face several penalties under Nigerian law, including:

Imprisonment: Depending on the severity of the charges, he could be sentenced to a significant prison term. For example, criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds can lead to sentences ranging from several years to life imprisonment.

Fines: He may be required to pay substantial fines, which could be equivalent to or exceed the amount misappropriated.

Asset Forfeiture: Any assets acquired through the misappropriated funds could be seized by the government.

Disqualification from Holding Public Office: A conviction could result in a ban from holding any public office in the future.

Restitution: He might be ordered to repay the misappropriated funds to the state.

These penalties aim to serve as a deterrent to corruption and ensure accountability for public officials.
